An elderly woman was stabbed during a break-in at her home in south London early Saturday morning, according to police.
Officers received a call about the incident near Wellington Road and Base Line Road East at around 6:10 a. m. The woman was startled awake by a loud noise and discovered a man entering her house.
She was attacked and stabbed before she managed to call 911, police reported. Officers indicated that the woman and the intruder were not acquainted.
Multiple officers arrived at the scene, but the suspect began throwing broken glass at them as they approached, injuring one officer, said a spokesperson. A man was arrested on site.
The woman was taken by paramedics to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect also went to the hospital for minor injuries.
A 40-year-old man from London has been charged with aggravated assault, breaking and entering with intent, assaulting an officer with a weapon, and obstructing an officer.
The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court in London on Aug. 27.
