(Photo: Mahmood Haqdost/Wesal TV) Wesal TV (Whitby, Ont.): This summer, the biggest youth lacrosse tournament in the world is breaking records, and for the first time, matches are being held at Whitby’s newly opened Fieldgate Sports Complex. The 2026 Ontario Lacrosse Festival is currently happening, running from July 31 to Aug. 9. The Town of Whitby reports that a record-breaking 501 teams are participating this year in the ten-day event, making it the largest festival in its 21-year history. The tournament is taking place across 16 arenas throughout Durham Region, including two new ice pads at the $154-million Fieldgate Sports Complex. The Town of Whitby officially acquired the building on July 30, just a day before the tournament kicked off. At this time, only the arena section of the complex is open. The swimming pool, gymnasium, walking track and outdoor facilities are still being prepared ahead of their official grand opening on Sept. 12. For athletes and their families, this tournament marks their first opportunity to explore the new facility. “We have never had 501 teams in the event,” said Ron Mac Spadyen, program director with the Ontario Lacrosse Association. “This is the largest number of team entries we’ve ever had.”

The association estimates that around 9,500 players and coaches are involved in 980 games as they vie for 48 provincial championships. Organizers anticipate about 55,000 spectators will attend over these ten days.
Whitby has been hosting this festival since its inception in 2003.
Lacrosse is a team sport where players use a stick with a small net attached to carry, pass and shoot a rubber ball into their opponent’s goal.
This sport has Indigenous origins in Canada and stands as one of Canada’s official national sports. There are various versions of lacrosse such as box lacrosse which is played indoors on a smaller surface and field lacrosse which takes place outdoors on a larger field.
Mac Spadyen explained that Durham Region continues to host this tournament because there are many arenas located closely together. In fact, Whitby alone boasts eight playing surfaces within about a fifteen-minute drive which makes it convenient for teams and families to move between games.
Fortunately for everyone involved, the new Fieldgate arena was ready just in time.
In written responses to Wesal TV, officials from Whitby stated that substantial completion was achieved before they took ownership of the building. Since then staff members have been installing equipment while testing systems and training employees as work continues in areas that aren’t yet open.
Mac Spadyen mentioned that it’s up to local authorities to decide when a facility is prepared for public access.
He noted that an inspection by Ontario Lacrosse Association was carried out on areas needed for tournaments and they were quite impressed with what they saw.
“The arena pads, dressing rooms, parking and concourse area all worked very well,” he said.
For local athletes competing inside this new venue adds something special to their experience during this tournament.
Shaun Murphy who assists coaching Whitby’s U15 Warriors celebrated after his team secured a 2-0 win against their opponents with their goalie achieving a shutout performance.
“The game was exciting,” Murphy said. “We got a couple of late goals and we’re off to a good start.”

He hopes his team can make it all the way to championship game stating “We would love to get to finals and win it.”
Players also shared their enthusiasm about experiencing play inside this new arena for themselves.
“The facility is really nice,” said player Nevin French adding “I really like the new building.”
Barrett Tomlinson who took up lacrosse looking for something fun to do during summer says he considers this festival one of his favorite events each year.“ It means so much,” Tomlinson told Wesal TV “You have tons of fun while you’re doing it.” He dreams about playing professionally someday either in National Lacrosse League or Premier Lacrosse League. Parents mention there are benefits linked with participating but also highlight significant costs associated. Shani Mc Fadden pointed out travel expenses rank among biggest costs. “We live north so everything involves driving,” she mentioned explaining further how expenses like gas add up along with wear-and-tear on vehicles along with hotel stays when needed.
Even so she believes engaging with sport has helped her son develop valuable skills. “He’s gained confidence learned teamwork discipline.” Matthew Andres added his son Luke became increasingly involved after pandemic situation passed.
He mentioned how major impact revolves around increased self-assurance citing Luke stepping into leadership roles supporting younger teammates.
Overall participation costs less than hockey according opinions shared among parents however they believe more equipment lending programs could help introduce additional families into sport scene.
According sources provided by available through Whitney Minor Licrossee Society registration fees fall roughly between $350-$375 through house leagues whereas competitive programs typically range starting upwards around $600-$1400 without accounting additional gear required travelling expenses incurred relating tournaments hosted away from home base location.
The Town provides Access Program aimed aiding low-income households affording municipal recreation activities though doesn’t encompass club enrollment dues nor transport charges connected resulting therein deriving directly related purposes elsewhere outside localities supported directly under municipality oversight umbrella guidelines established overall structure framework set forth beforehand
