The two could be seen engaging in conversation and chuckling while the names of those who lost their lives in the attacks were being announced. Broadcast images displayed Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez sharing smiles together, contrasting with other moments from the ceremony where family members of victims were visibly upset as they honored their loved ones from the stage.
This year’s Ground Zero ceremony took place on the 25th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, which resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths. Victim families upheld the yearly tradition by reading aloud names of those lost, interspersed with moments of silence to remember when planes hit the Twin Towers, Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
The criticism emerged ahead of this event due to objections regarding Mamdani’s attendance. Families affected by September 11 initiated a petition urging him not to participate, claiming his presence was unsuitable given his political views and affiliations. CBS New York reported last month about this movement, noting that support for it grew notably just before the ceremony.
Mamdani, who is New York’s first Muslim mayor, dismissed these calls and asserted he would attend to pay tribute to both victims and first responders. In advance of this anniversary, he also issued an order proclaiming September 11 as a day for remembrance.
Just before the incident that drew backlash, another tense moment unfolded at the ceremony: Mamdani shook hands with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani led New York during the attacks in 2001 and had recently urged Mamdani not to show up at this year’s event. Their interaction consisted of a brief handshake that felt rather frosty at Ground Zero.
The evening prior included a memorial procession through Manhattan that visited Christian, Jewish, and Muslim places of worship. Reports indicated that Mamdani participated only at its final stop at an Islamic center.
Mamdani has previously ignited debate over his comments regarding life after September 11. During his campaign for election, he shared stories about a family member who ceased using public transit after feeling unsafe wearing a hijab following the attacks.
Critics argued he diverted attention from remembering victims toward focusing on Muslims’ experiences post-attacks; supporters claimed he was highlighting increased hostility directed towards Muslims during that period.
