With heavy hearts, the family shares the news of Florian Alexandre Labelle’s passing at the age of 79. He departed this world at Sault Area Hospital on September 4, 2026, at 12:10 p. m., after a sudden illness.
Florian was born in Laverlochère, Quebec, and lived a life marked by his faith, creativity, independence, and kindness towards others.
He had a unique perspective that allowed him to see endless possibilities in everyday objects. As a lifelong mechanic, logging trucker, inventor, and self-taught engineer, he could create smart solutions for common problems. His inventions were as distinctive as he was and often brought joy alongside their usefulness.
Florian constructed his own home in Ophir from scratch; he even built his own lathe and designed numerous machines and gadgets. One of his notable creations was an intricate wood-splitting system with a cherry-picker arm and conveyor belt that helped him move wood efficiently without extra effort. He also crafted toenail clippers out of bicycle brakes so he could clip his nails comfortably.
His inventiveness didn’t stop at mechanics; Florian was also skilled in sewing. He made clothes like overalls, hats, wallets, and leather bags. His engineer-style outfits became part of his signature look. There’s a funny story about one pair of camouflage overalls that turned legendary when Florian-who was colorblind-picked fabric with bright purple tones without realizing it. When someone pointed it out to him, he shrugged it off because he liked the fabric just as it was.
Cooking also showcased his creativity. Florian became well-known for making “Rock Soup,” which started with dropping a large rock into boiling water followed by various vegetables and whatever else was available. Miraculously, he managed to turn this unexpected mix into something delightful for his kids-a true testament to how he transformed the mundane into something special.
At the core of Florian’s life was his faith and dedication to God. He actively participated as an elder at Thessalon Bible Chapel for many years where he studied Scripture diligently while encouraging others through example. He led weekly Bible studies at Light Haven Retirement Home and welcomed people into his home who needed someone to talk to. He supported individuals on their Alcoholics Anonymous journeys and served as a youth counselor at Galilean Bible Camp where he guided young folks facing challenges.
Florian had an incredible ability for compassion; it wasn’t about having all the answers but rather offering support when needed. Whether sharing coffee or listening to someone’s troubles, he made everyone feel valued. His door was always open with room for one more person around the table.
A fiercely independent spirit defined him along with a hint of stubbornness sometimes; he believed in being self-sufficient while working smarter instead of harder-and never accepted limitations simply because something hadn’t been done before.
As a father who truly tried his best to be there for them, Florian leaves behind three children: Alain Labelle (Frieda), Eric Labelle (Tammy), and Sonia Gioia (James). Each child held a special place in his heart alongside grandchildren Chanda Labelle, Dalen Labelle, Dana Labelle, Kassidy Gioia and Kinsley Labelle-each unique individual made him proud.
He is also survived by siblings Ettienne Labelle and Danielle Shanks along with many friends such as John Howarth, Ivan Clark, Donna Gioia, Bob Raynor, Joseph Martin and Adam Brubacher among countless others whose lives felt the warmth of his presence.
Florian has been preceded in death by his brother Laurier Labelle.
The lessons imparted by Florian encouraged those around him towards self-reliance while showing that challenges can indeed be met creatively; most importantly instilling the belief that nothing is impossible.
A life filled with faith put into action along with freely given compassion characterized him throughout time spent here on Earth.
An apt choice for an epitaph came from Florian himself:
“Born again to forgive.”
The family invites friends to join them at Thessalon Bible Chapel located at 11 Huron Street on Friday September 11th starting from 3pm until the funeral service scheduled for 4pm officiated by John Howarth followed by luncheon in church hall afterward. A burial will take place later on.
