Labour Day is a public holiday that occurs on the first Monday of September every year, and this year, it’s on Sept. 7 in Canada.

This holiday has been around since 1894, thanks to the efforts of various labour unions in Canada pushing for change until Prime Minister John Sparrow David Thompson introduced legislation that received royal assent in July 1894.

So what can you expect to be open or closed this upcoming Monday in the Niagara Region? Most businesses in Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake will be operating since both locations are recognized as tourism areas and can stay open during federal or provincial holidays.

In contrast, the other 10 municipalities in Niagara, including St. Catharines and Welland, are mostly closed. While some shops may have specific hours listed, others mention “Hours may differ” because it’s a holiday. The safest option? Give them a call first.
