Burlington, Ont. – Aug. 18, 2026 – The City of Burlington is saddened by the Ontario Land Tribunal’s ruling on the Nelson Quarry expansion at Mount Nemo.
Council has been consistent in its stance: the City opposed this expansion due to concerns about its effects on the environment, wildlife, groundwater, rural communities, and the quality of life for residents impacted by this proposal.
We understand that this news will be challenging for many residents and community advocates who have dedicated years to safeguarding the Mount Nemo Plateau and Niagara Escarpment. We appreciate the effort and evidence provided by residents, organizations, and partners throughout this process and acknowledge the ongoing concerns within the community.
The City will take time to thoroughly examine the complete decision with legal advisors and technical staff to grasp its implications-this includes any conditions, staging requirements, monitoring duties, further approval steps, and other legal or procedural matters arising from it. It’s premature to determine what this means for timing, implementation, enforcement, or future involvement from the City.
