Intense rain and wind storms rolled through the Greater Toronto Area and much of southern Ontario on Wednesday, causing flooding on some roads in Mississauga and bringing down trees in various spots throughout the city.

However, “no significant impacts were reported in Mississauga following yesterday evening’s severe thunderstorms,” said City of Mississauga spokesperson Irene Mc Cutcheon to INsauga. com on Thursday. “A limited number of service requests were received related to localized roadway flooding and downed trees. However, these issues were addressed in the evening and overnight, with any remaining cleanup activities continuing today.”

City staff are also out on Thursday “assessing parks and trails to identify and address any additional storm-related impacts,” Mc Cutcheon added.

Peel Regional Police mentioned that hazardous conditions due to heavy rain and strong winds were observed on Southdown Road and Bromsgrove Road in southwest Mississauga during the storms that swept across southern Ontario and the GTA from Wednesday afternoon into the evening hours.

Some areas of Mississauga experienced flooding

Bromsgrove Road was temporarily closed between Southdown Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard due to flooding but has since reopened, according to police.

Credit Valley Conservation issued local flood warnings and watches early Wednesday evening as several storms brought heavy rainfall, unusually strong winds, and even hail to parts of the region.

The warnings and watches were downgraded early Thursday morning as CVC announced no further rain is expected shortly.

A number of communities in the GTA and southern Ontario faced main roads and highways being flooded on Wednesday afternoon and evening. Many people woke up Thursday morning to discover significant damage caused by strong winds.

After the storm damage at Rogers Stadium, do you feel safe attending an event there?

Officials from various towns, cities, and regions are currently investigating whether any tornadoes touched down on Wednesday.

Thousands without power across the GTA

Meanwhile, many residents across the GTA and parts of Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe remained without power early Thursday morning after severe storms caused street flooding along with fallen trees and utility lines.

Toronto Hydro reported early Thursday that approximately 8,300 homes and businesses were still without electricity while Hydro One stated over 47,000 customers remained offline.

The localized flooding led to closures of several major roadways in Toronto including parts of Yonge Street as well as Don Valley Parkway. Subway services were also suspended in certain areas during rush hour on Wednesday afternoon.

This intense weather system brought heavy rain, large hailstones, along with a tornado risk across wide areas of southern Ontario as skies darkened over downtown Toronto with hail hitting neighborhoods further north.

Screenshots shared on social media captured large hail falling alongside torrential rains that flooded vehicles at bus stations prompting people to seek shelter quickly.

The storm resulted in flight delays along with cancellations at Toronto Pearson Airport located in Mississauga while Rogers Stadium-a venue for up to 50,000 people-sustained considerable damage.
