The construction of Guelph’s Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program has successfully reached its second important milestone on time, with the reopening of the Macdonell Street and Wyndham Street intersection on August 16.
This achievement follows the reopening of Lower Wyndham Street in July, which marked the first major milestone in Phase 1 of the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program (DTIRP).
The intersection at Macdonell-Wyndham was closed starting July 19 for construction that was expected to take about a month. The contractor, Steed and Evans, worked overnight to speed up progress and complete everything as planned.
Completing this second milestone on schedule highlights both the progress of the project and the dedication from both city officials and contractors to lessen any disruptions for those in downtown, as noted by city representatives.
“Students are a vital part of our Downtown community and are among the many people who rely on transit to travel through the area,” said Kyle Gibson, acting general manager for transportation and engineering services. “Reopening this route now will improve mobility, reduce disruptions, and help create a smoother experience for residents, students, businesses, visitors, and all transit users travelling in and out of our Downtown core, helping to support local businesses as activity picks up this fall.”
With this second milestone completed, construction is now moving into the next phase of the project.
After Labour Day weekend, crews will start working north along Wyndham Street from the Quebec Street-Douglas Street intersection heading toward Woolwich Street.
This stage involves closing St. George’s Square to all traffic while Quebec and Douglas streets will temporarily become dead ends.
The Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program aims to replace and upgrade infrastructure in downtown Guelph. As construction progresses further changes to traffic patterns, transit options, and parking availability can be expected.
