Trump Accuses Canada of Exploiting the U.S.

U. S. President Donald Trump argues that Canada has cost the U. S. billions and restricts American banks during a conversation with reporters in Washington.

As trade tensions escalate between Canada and the United States, President Trump targeted Canada once more, presenting a series of complaints to back up his assertion that their northern neighbor has been “ripping off” the U. S. for many years.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Trump stated that Canada has been taking advantage of America by enforcing what he termed “tremendous tariffs” on U. S. farmers. He also claimed that Canada is exploiting American tourists and airlines.

Trump expressed annoyance over the absence of U. S. banks in Canada, describing it as “sort of emblematic of the way they treat us,” a complaint he has consistently voiced throughout this trade conflict.

“Canada has all of its major banks here and we’re their biggest source of income, far bigger than they are in Canada. They basically don’t allow banks of America to be in Canada,” he informed reporters in the Oval Office.

“So, they have their banks here, Bank of Canada, all of them, big banks, big, beautiful banks. I think they have six or seven major banks here. We don’t have our banks there. You know why? They don’t allow it,” he remarked.

However, the association representing bankers in Canada pushed back against Trump’s claims in 2025 when it confirmed that half of all foreign bank assets in the country are U. S. subsidiaries and branches.

Trump also revisited an ongoing issue regarding aviation certification, alleging that Canada has unjustly hindered sales of jets made in the U. S.

He referenced his January warning about imposing high tariffs on Canadian-made Bombardier aircraft unless they approved Gulfstream jets produced in America.

“Gulfstream is the best private jet, considered the best of the best, and they won’t certify it in Canada because they make a competitor, Bombardier Global Express; so their competitor didn’t want them to have competition. So for approximately nine years this has been going on,” he said.

Although Transport Canada hasn’t certified Gulfstream G700 or G800 models due to manufacturing issues yet; two models from Gulfstream were certified just one month after Trump’s threats were made.

‘We don’t need them’: Trump on Canada

Commenting on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s choice to abandon a trade deal and enforce dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs starting September 8th , Trump told reporters that “Canada has felt emboldened.”

He suggested that the United States should lessen its dependence on Canada; arguing that America possesses superior oil , gas , and timber resources.

“They need us. We don’t need them. They’ve taken advantage of us for years, and it’s time to stop,” he said.

“We can’t lose (between) $60 to $100 billion a year for allowing them to make cars. We don’t want their cars.”

A week after issuing an executive order aimed at renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America,” which drew criticism from both Canadian and American politicians and businesses; Trump defended this action saying “America and people in this country love it.”

“We do things like that because we’re fighting for our country. Canada has taken advantage of us,” he added.
