On October 15, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti joined forces with Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University, to mark a significant milestone in the development of York University’s Markham Campus by officially unveiling University Boulevard. They were accompanied by members of the Markham City Council.

Nestled in Markham Centre, which is the city’s expanding downtown area and conveniently near public transport, University Boulevard will serve as a welcoming path for students heading to York University’s new campus set to open in 2023.

“The City of Markham is thrilled to name this street in Markham Centre as we look forward to the opening of York University’s Markham Campus in 2023,” stated Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “University Boulevard will enhance the beautifully designed campus and strengthen Markham’s role as a center for talent and an educated workforce.”

“This is an exciting phase for York University as we approach the launch of our new Markham Campus,” said Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University. “We can’t wait to welcome our first group of students in Fall 2023 and offer them valuable academic programs and research opportunities that focus on creative technologies, entrepreneurship and innovation management, digital technologies, new media and communications, financial technologies, along with computer science and software development.”

In collaboration with YSpace, the Markham Small Business Centre, various Economic Development initiatives from the City, plus tech companies already located in Markham, this new campus aims to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship within both Markham and the Regional Municipality of York. It will also draw more skilled individuals who want to study or work here while boosting growth for this progressive community recognized as a leading hub for technology and innovation.
