Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of certain areas in Port Elgin and another spot south of the town on Saturday afternoon.
Just before 5 p. m., West Region OPP released a notice advising drivers to avoid the Bruce-Saugeen Townline, which was completely shut down south of Port Elgin between Side road 10 and J& I Side Road. There was a significant police presence in that area.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit, which looks into serious injuries or fatalities involving police, later confirmed there had been a shooting involving law enforcement that resulted in a man’s death.
Simultaneously, Saugeen Shores police requested that people stay away from the intersection of Gustavus Street and Goderich Street due to a multi-vehicle accident. A 6 p. m. update from Saugeen Shores police indicated that the intersection had reopened.
Saugeen Shores police stated on social media that there was no threat to public safety and more information would be shared by the OPP when it’s available.
It wasn’t immediately clear if these two events were connected.
