From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Donald Trump aimed to heighten his trade tensions with Canada on Sunday afternoon and made a request on Truth Social that Canadian companies wanting access to U. S. markets relocate their operations back within American borders.

His latest comments came as officials from Canada indicated that they were ready for a prolonged standoff with the U. S., following failed trade negotiations and Trump’s announcement of tariffs reaching up to 50 percent on certain Canadian products like dairy and lumber. In response, Canada has imposed similar tariffs on U. S. steel, aluminum, and other exports.

On Sunday afternoon, Trump stated that Canadian businesses ought to shift their headquarters and manufacturing sites back home in order to dodge new tariffs set for 2027.

“Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately. Many of them are Companies that moved out years ago due to stupid U. S. Leadership. When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!” Trump wrote.

In another post, he claimed Canada was among America’s worst trading partners despite being its second-largest partner overall. According to data from the U. S. trade representative, nearly $900 billion flows between Canada and the U. S. annually.

“One of the Worst Abusers is Canada,” Trump wrote.

“I don’t want Canadian cars, I don’t want Canadian parts, I don’t want Canadian anything,” he added. “They’ve been ripping us off for decades, and it’s going to stop.”

The president credited his tariff policies with revitalizing American auto manufacturing; however, numerous manufacturers still depend heavily on components produced abroad including in Canada.

This year Ford expressed gratitude towards Trump’s administration for including certain vehicle parts in tariff exemptions; still unclear remains whether this latest round of tariffs will spare automakers from economic difficulties. The president’s message on Truth Social seemed suggest otherwise.

Lately Trump’s willingness for dialogue with Canada appears limited as he adopts a more aggressive approach while repeatedly taking jabs at figures like Mark Carney and other politicians such as Ontario’s Doug Ford.

This past Thursday he announced an executive order mandating all federal agencies refer Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in another effort aimed at aggravating Canada’s government-a gesture met with mockery by many observers.

Doug Ford faced off personally against Trump last week; he warned Sunday that any ongoing trade conflict would severely harm both economies-U. S. and Canada alike.

“Everyone’s feeling bullied by President Trump, and this is the worst thing you could do for the American economy,” he said during an appearance on ABC’s This Week. “I just don’t see the purpose. It’s absolutely backwards.”

He described Trump’s actions as “something out of Saturday Night Live.”

“No one is going to call it Lake America,” Ford said.

Ford previously labeled trump a “bully”and”a loser”in comments made last week.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew also voiced harsh criticism towards trump while urging Canada’s government not backing down.

“I think Donald trump is very weak. I think America is weaker around world today than it was year ago. He’s about get slaughtered midterms cost living number one issue he’s completely out touch cost living Americans,”Kinew said.

Canadian officials recently announced retaliatory measures but have received warnings from their counterparts over possible repercussions if further actions taken.

“If there’s further retaliation from Canadians side, we’re not going sit down take that. Our view don’t retaliate,”U. S. trade representative Jamieson Greer told broadcaster this past week.

“I know how people feel in canada what they think,”he added.”So, you know it’s unfortunate but it what it is. And we have own trade policy we’ll proceed way that’s best United States.”
