A new aerial gondola might soon carry visitors along the sunny shores of Ontario’s most beloved beach town.
Wasaga Beach boasts the world’s longest freshwater beach, but transporting large crowds across such a long stretch can really challenge local transit systems.
The Town of Wasaga Beach announced on Thursday that they have begun to consider adding an aerial ropeway along the waterfront, which would serve both as an attraction and a transportation option.
Wasaga Beach has signed a Letter of Intent with Doppelmayr Canada to investigate this potential gondola system as part of the Town’s broader Destination Wasaga initiative.
Doppelmayr is well-known for creating some of the longest and most intricate aerial gondola systems, serving purposes like public transport, access to mountain peaks, and sightseeing adventures.
A gondola in Wasaga Beach would fulfill dual roles for the town, helping residents and tourists travel along the beachfront without overloading local roads, while also providing a fresh perspective on this popular destination.
“This is precisely the kind of private-sector interest we hoped Destination Wasaga would inspire,” said Mayor Brian Smith.
“We have one of the most incredible natural and tourism spots in the country, and experienced partners are recognizing its potential. This gives us a chance to explore bold ideas that could enhance how people navigate our community while creating new reasons for visitors to enjoy Wasaga Beach all year round.”
The agreement marks an initial step towards implementing a gondola system, though no specific routes have been disclosed yet.
However, there is now a framework in place to explore concepts, routes, locations, and other factors related to a potential aerial transportation system “that could improve connections between key destinations while creating distinctive new visitor experiences near the beachfront.”
Luc Guy, CEO of Doppelmayr Canada, stated that they see “exciting potential to explore how proven ropeway technology could enhance connectivity on another level while crafting an experience that is uniquely Wasaga Beach.”
And that’s not all when it comes to aerial entertainment planned for Wasaga Beach.
Alongside exploring a gondola project, Wasaga Beach is also looking into adding nature-based attractions and accommodations. They’ve started discussions with Ecotrek about introducing new activities like treetop trekking and elevated net attractions paired with camping and ‘glamping’ options.
Sandra Watts, General Manager of External Relations for the Town of Wasaga Beach hopes these kinds of attractions can help shift the beach town into a “four-season destination.”
“The goal isn’t just to attract more visitors during our busiest summer days but also to give millions who already love Wasaga Beach even more reasons to stay longer and return throughout the year while supporting local businesses.”
