The province’s police oversight agency is looking into a situation where a man was shot multiple times by officers in Kingston, Ont., on Wednesday morning.
A statement from Kingston Police mentioned that Waaban Crossing – a bridge over the Cataraqui River – was closed due to an officer-involved shooting that took place around 9:40 a. m.
According to a separate release from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), police received a 911 call about ten minutes earlier from a distressed man on the bridge.
The SIU investigates incidents involving police and members of the public, especially those resulting in serious injuries, death, or gunfire.
The agency reported that police “encountered the man” and had an “interaction” that resulted in two officers discharging their weapons. The man was hit multiple times and transported to the hospital with severe injuries, they added.
The SIU also stated it retrieved two firearms belonging to the officers and one firearm “belonging to the male” at the scene.
Four investigators along with two forensic investigators have been assigned to look into this case.
