Mississauga is gearing up to celebrate Italy as one of the city’s largest and longest-standing cultural events makes its return to Celebration Square this weekend.
Mississauga Italfest is set to attract big crowds to the downtown area on Friday and Saturday, with thousands expected to come together for two days filled with Italian cuisine, music, traditions, and fun.
This free festival takes place on Friday, Aug. 21, from 5 p. m. to 11 p. m., and Saturday, Aug. 22, from noon to 11 p. m. at Mississauga Celebration Square.
Now in its 15th year, Italfest has evolved from a local gathering into one of Ontario’s Top 100 Festivals, bringing in visitors from across the province, Canada, the United States, and even Italy.
The annual event was established in 2012 by a group of Canadian Italians who aimed to keep Italian traditions alive and share them with others. Since then, it has become a key part of Mississauga’s summer festival lineup.
And there’s going to be lots happening this weekend.
Attendees can look forward to authentic Italian dishes like fresh pasta and pizza, espresso and cannoli, food trucks, artisan vendors, and over 60 vendors throughout the festival.
The stages at Celebration Square will feature music and entertainment from international artists, traditional Italian folk groups, heritage dancers, regional choirs, along with Canadian music legend Alfie Zappacosta among the notable acts performing.
There will also be plenty of chances for visitors to get involved instead of just watching.
The festival includes cooking demonstrations, bocce tournaments, Italian card games, food-eating competitions for all ages including children’s activities; plus a soccer challenge with sports-zone inflatables where attendees can learn how to play bocce as well.
A cultural pavilion will highlight Italian history and customs while ceremonial marches featuring representatives from Italy’s Bersaglieri forces and police will create another link to the country’s rich past.
This weekend’s festivities are also connected with Ferragosto-a significant summer holiday celebrated in Italy every August.
Organizers view Italfest as more than just an event for the Italian-Canadian community; they highlight its importance in sharing Italian heritage with Mississauga’s increasingly diverse residents.
This inclusive approach has helped grow attendance since moving the event to Celebration Square.
Over time, Italfest has featured numerous prominent performers including both Italian acts and Canadian stars. A standout moment occurred when young Canadian singer Roberta Battaglia graced the main stage before later showcasing her talent on America’s Got Talent.
Despite challenges during COVID-19 pandemic restrictions leading up until now-a virtual version took place in 2021 that attracted over 40 thousand online views-Italfest continues strong today after receiving an Achievement Award from Festivals and Events Ontario for that effort!
Now returning right back into downtown Mississauga comes yet another exciting summer weekend full of delicious food options alongside vibrant musical performances celebrating all things related directly or indirectly around “la dolce vita” culture!
Italfest runs Friday August twenty-first starting five PM through eleven PM; then again Saturday August twenty-second starting noon through eleven PM at gorgeous scenic locale known locally simply as “Celebration Square!”
