Iran’s Foreign Minister Highlights US Debt as Trump Promises ‘Economic Warfare’

The federal deficit has doubled in the last decade, with spending increasing under both Donald Trump and Joe Biden – Trump approved $8.4 trillion in debt during his first term largely for Covid-19 relief efforts, while Biden greenlit $4.3 trillion in new debt. So far in fiscal year 2026, which began in October 2025, another $1.8 trillion has been added to the debt. Both Democrats and Republicans reacted with outrage over this milestone, with Democrats blaming Trump and a Republican-led Congress for increased spending. “The President claimed he’d eliminate the debt during his first term. Well, we all knew that was false. Instead, he pushed it up to $40 trillion while he and his family profited billions,” Mark Kelly, a Democratic senator from Arizona wrote on X. “Republicans racked up the bill, gave billionaires another tax cut, and now they want to lecture working families about ‘fiscal responsibility.’ You can’t max out your credit card AND pretend you’re an accountant. Choose a struggle,” Jasmine Crockett, a Democratic congresswoman from Texas stated. “The Republican One Big Ugly Bill adds over $4 trillion alone-all just to disgracefully give tax breaks to billionaires and corporations,” Jason Crow, a Democratic congressman from Colorado posted on X. Crow is referencing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which estimates by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office suggest will increase the deficit by $3.3 trillion. After Republican senator Rick Scott tweeted that “Congress needs to get spending under control”, social media users quickly pointed out that he voted for this bill. Republican congressman Thomas Massie has often disagreed with Trump as well as his own party members; he wears a three-inch-long pin known as a debt badge on his suit jacket that updates real-time national debt figures. “When I created the debt badge, our national debt was just above $31 trillion,” he posted on X. “$4,000 per year per American-that’s what we’re paying annually in interest on our debts owed to banks & foreign nations. A family of four owes $16,000 every year just in interest!” Massie explained. “I lost my re-election because I opposed policies responsible for this.” In May, after serving seven terms, he lost his House primary seat to Ed Gallrein-a retired Navy Seal turned farmer who was encouraged into running by Trump.
