The University of Windsor has achieved its highest-ever ranking in the QS World University Rankings, coming in third in Ontario among non-medical universities and placing within the top 20 percent worldwide for research impact.

Now in its 23rd edition, the QS World University Rankings assessed over 8,800 institutions and ranked 1,504 universities from 106 countries. UWindsor secured the 537th spot overall, climbing nine positions from last year’s rank of 546th. This improvement makes it one of only eight Canadian universities to enhance its standing and marks its third straight year among the top 550 universities globally.

This result is primarily driven by research citation impact. Researchers at UWindsor averaged 161 citations per faculty member, nearly three times the global average of 59.9. This performance placed the university at 265th globally on the QS Citations per Faculty metric, reflecting an increase of 34 positions compared to last year. The metric takes into account university size to enable a fairer comparison across different institutions.

For students, this ranking sends a strong message as well. UWindsor’s Employment Outcomes indicator ranked 497th worldwide, placing the university in the top 35 percent globally regarding how graduates perform in the job market and their broader career impacts.

“These rankings reflect years of deliberate investment in our researchers and our academic mission,” said Dr. J. J. Mc Murtry, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Windsor. “Reaching our highest-ever global ranking, and doing it alongside institutions much larger than ours, speaks to the strength of this university and the significance of the research conducted here.”

Citation strength covers a wide range across the University’s academic fields. More than 39 percent of counted citations came from Engineering and Technology, followed by Social Sciences and Management at 18 percent; Life Sciences and Medicine; and Natural Sciences each at around 13 percent; with Arts and Humanities contributing about 11 percent.

Research at UWindsor is also leading to tangible benefits for communities-ranging from Great Lakes monitoring and freshwater restoration to cancer studies, housing policies, and municipal innovation.

“These results reflect the quality of scholarship happening in every corner of this university,” said Dr. Shanthi Johnson, vice-president for research and innovation at UWindsor. “From engineering to sciences as well as arts, humanities, and social sciences-our researchers are producing work that is being read, built upon, and cited by scholars worldwide. That global reach is what drives a ranking like this.”
