A worker has lost their life while on the job in Markham, according to officials.
Ontario’s Ministry of Labour confirmed via email that it was alerted about the workplace fatality in Markham on Thursday. A ministry inspector was sent to the location to look into what happened.
The ministry did not provide details on how the worker died.
York Regional Police did not confirm the death but mentioned they responded to reports of an injured individual near Mc Cowan Road and Highway 7 on Thursday afternoon.
Police noted there was a significant power outage affecting traffic lights at that intersection during the time of the incident.
No information has been released regarding any connection between the incident and the power outage.
Alectra Utilities’ outage map indicated that over 6,000 customers were without electricity in Markham at peak times Thursday, starting around 11:55 a. m. The cause of this outage was listed as a “vehicle collision with equipment.”
Power was restored late Thursday afternoon.
Lynne Cunningham, spokesperson for Alectra, expressed that the company was “deeply saddened” to learn about the accident. She stated that an investigation is underway and Alectra has no further comments at this time.
