As many Hamilton residents take advantage of the long weekend, they should be aware that there will be some closures or changes to city services and local businesses for the civic holiday on Monday.

Since the civic holiday isn’t a statutory holiday in Ontario, many private businesses can decide whether or not to open. Be sure to check with individual retailers before heading out this Monday.

Here’s what you need to know about closures and service changes:

Transportation

The Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) buses will run on a Sunday schedule, with the last buses leaving downtown around midnight.

No service will be available on Route 12 Wentworth or Route 42 Mohawk East. My Ride on-demand service and Trans-Cab will also follow the Sunday schedule.

DARTS will have holiday service hours. All subscription trips are cancelled except for dialysis trips, and travelers must book their rides in advance.

Parking enforcement will pause from Sunday at 10 p. m. until Monday at 10 p. m., although officers may still patrol special events and other key areas.

Waste collection

No garbage, recycling, green bin, yard waste or bulk waste collection will happen on Monday.

This week’s collection will shift one day later than usual, so make sure your waste is at the curb by 7 a. m. on your collection day.

The transfer stations and community recycling centres in Hamilton will also be closed.

Closures

City Hall along with all municipal administrative offices will be closed on Monday but will reopen Tuesday.

Additionally, the following places will be closed:

Hamilton civic museums Hamilton Farmers’ Market Hamilton municipal parking system office Hamilton Public Library branches (also closed Sunday)Recreation centres, arenas and seniors’ centres Municipal Service Centres and Citizen Service Centre Public Health administrative offices, including the vaccine records line Alcohol, drug and gambling services Child and Adolescent Services walk-in clinic Dental clinics and dental bus Needle Syringe Program evening van service Tropical Greenhouse at Gage Park Hamilton Animal Services office and shelter Adult Day Program at Macassa Lodge ATS customer service office

What’s open

You’ll find outdoor pools open for regular programming during this time.

A few attractions that remain open include:

Wild Waterworks Hamilton conservation areas Royal Botanical Gardens Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Starlite Drive-In Theatre

Most grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants are likely to stay open; however, some might have shorter hours than usual.

The majority of LCBO stores are expected to operate on reduced holiday hours while several locations of Hamilton Beer Store may also be open. It’s best to check their website for exact store hours.

Lime Ridge Mall and Eastgate Square plan to operate under reduced holiday hours as well. Jackson Square won’t be open but its restaurants along with the movie theatre will continue operating.
