The driver of the truck that struck the West Markham Street pedestrian bridge on July 13 had left part of the vehicle raised after dropping off a dumpster nearby, according to Little Rock police. City officials found that the collision had caused irreparable damage to the bridge and started demolishing it on Tuesday. A section of Markham close to the bridge has been closed off for over two weeks due to safety issues. After reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with the head of Arkansas Mini Dumpsters, detectives concluded that driver John Jaynes, 60, had kept the truck’s boom or hoist elevated, resulting in it hitting the underside of the bridge shortly after 4 p. m. on July 13, an affidavit states. The bridge spans a section of Markham near both the Arkansas School for the Deaf and Blind and the Capitol View-Stiff Station neighborhood. The affidavit describes the truck as a 2021 Kenworth T880 dump truck; however, trucks that deliver dumpsters are typically referred to as roll-off trucks since they have cable hoists. Detectives reviewed footage showing the truck moving east along West Markham Street from Kavanaugh Boulevard with its boom raised just before impact, according to the affidavit. On Monday, Jaynes pleaded not guilty to a felony charge for leaving an accident scene that resulted in property damage exceeding $10,000 and a traffic violation for careless driving. He told detectives this incident cost him his job at Arkansas Mini Dumpsters and mentioned he didn’t have an attorney. “I’m at the lowest point in my life,” Jaynes told investigators on July 20, as stated in the affidavit. “I’ve never been in this kind of trouble.” Jaynes decided to invoke his right to remain silent and ended his interview with authorities, according to documents. A judge from Little Rock District Court released Jaynes on his own recognizance on Monday, court records indicate. Initially, city officials estimated removing the pedestrian bridge could cost up to $182,000. Last week, Little Rock’s Board of Directors approved an emergency resolution allowing Weaver-Bailey Contractors to start demolition work immediately for up to $102,185. This amount includes a 20% contingency fee. Investigators say Jaynes left without notifying police or his supervisors at work after striking the bridge. Christopher Meyer, owner of Arkansas Mini Dumpsters, informed detectives that Jaynes is solely responsible for accessing that truck and mentioned that Jaynes denied knowing anything about hitting the bridge. Meyer explained that on July 13, Jaynes was tasked with delivering a dumpster at Kroger located at 614 Beechwood St., suggesting it’s likely he forgot to lower his boom afterward as per what was noted in the affidavit. After being questioned by detectives on July 20th , he handed over his keys for both his truck and company credit card along with a business door key while asking police to return them back to Meyer as per details provided in their report.
