New fraud claims have led the Law Society of Ontario to pursue the suspension of lawyer Raj Grewal – a former Liberal Member of Parliament from Brampton who was previously cleared of charges related to gambling debts.

This month, the governing body that oversees lawyers and paralegals in Ontario announced it is looking into possible “misappropriated and/or misapplied trust monies” involving Grewal. The law society states that the ex-MP “may have knowingly participated in, facilitated or otherwise failed to prevent dishonesty, fraud, crime or illegal conduct.”

In a notice issued on July 10, the law society mentioned it is seeking his suspension or restriction, noting there are “reasonable grounds…to believe that there is a significant risk of harm to members of the public and/or to the public interest.”

Grewal established RSG Law, a Mississauga-based law firm. Earlier this month, the law society also suspended lawyer Davinder Singh Khattra from this firm due to similar allegations.

The ex-Brampton politician is reportedly dealing with multiple lawsuits. One case claimed that some proceeds from three fraudulent cheques amounting to over $5 million were deposited in RSG Law’s trust account. This lawsuit did not name Grewal personally and was resolved out of court, according to the .

The Law Society of Ontario has scheduled a hearing for Aug. 14. Multiple requests for comments from Grewal’s legal team went unanswered by publication time.

Grewal served as MP for Brampton East from 2015 until 2019 and resigned in 2018 amid allegations he leveraged his position to secure millions in loans to settle gambling debts. He left the Liberal caucus after his gambling problems became public knowledge.

In 2020, he faced four counts of breach of trust and one count of fraud exceeding $5,000 from the RCMP but only went on trial for two breach of trust charges. The court learned that two businessmen from Brampton who lent him $200,000 each attended events during Trudeau’s trip to India in 2018.

He was found not guilty on both breach of trust charges after prosecutors suggested Grewal offered assistance with visas or special access to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in return for financial support from associates and businesspeople within his riding. Following this, Grewal filed a lawsuit seeking damages against both the RCMP and Ontario’s attorney general.
