Several initiatives in Midwestern Ontario have been included in the most recent round of Ontario Community Environment Funding.
This fund utilizes penalties from polluters to finance projects that safeguard Ontario’s land, air, and water. This includes activities like shoreline cleanups, habitat restoration, and tree planting, as stated in a release from the province.
This funding round totals $3 million to support 26 projects across the province. Among them is funding for Goderich to Guelph Rail Trail Inc.’s G2G Invasive Species Removal and Native Planting Revitalizing project. It will focus on repairing degraded sections of the G2G Rail Trail by removing invasive species and introducing native plants to boost ecological health.
The Municipality of North Perth is also receiving funding for its Municipal Drain Erosion and Surface Runoff Protection Project. This initiative will reinforce a municipal drain with native plantings aimed at reducing erosion, filtering runoff, and enhancing water quality.
Lastly, the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation organization has secured funding for its Green Ribbon Champion Shoreline Restoration Program. This project seeks to restore fragile beach dune ecosystems through nature-based shoreline restoration efforts such as cultivating native grasses and engaging the community.

The Goderich to Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail is a gem in our region, connecting people to our rich rural heritage and natural landscapes,” added Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson. “By supporting this project, our government continues to empower local partners to tackle invasive species and restore native greenery so this historic trail can continue to be used and enjoyed in our community to its fullest potential.”
