We are heartbroken to share the news of Donna Kirkbride’s passing on July 4, 2026, at Saint Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB, at the age of 77.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Kirkbride from Portage la Prairie, Manitoba; daughter Michelle Kirkbride (Ben) of Winnipeg; son David Kirkbride (Kristin) also from Winnipeg; her cherished grandson Will Kirkbride; brother Rick Green (Cheryl) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousin Colleen Green with whom she had a unique bond.
Donna was predeceased by her parents William (Bill) and Shirley Green, sisters Pat Milburn and Linda Green, and brother Gordon Green.
Born in Portage la Prairie on March 20, 1949, she grew up on the family farm just outside the town. This upbringing sparked a lifelong love for nature-trees and animals-especially horses and dogs.
Perhaps inspired by being named after a nurse, Donna chose nursing as her career path and dedicated 50 years to it. She graduated as an LPN in 1969 and an RN in 1979. Her journey began at Health Sciences Centre, Deer Lodge in Manitoba Clinic, Portage General Hospital in Churchill MB, and Kemano BC. However, most of her professional life was spent in the United States-Florida; San Antonio Texas; and Seattle Washington-where she specialized in cardiac nursing for over two decades. Loved by patients and respected by colleagues and doctors alike as one of the best nurses they ever encountered. Nursing was her passion until she reluctantly retired.
Donna had an endless curiosity about history-with a particular interest in World War II-as well as a love for reading and adventure. Traveling brought her immense joy; she visited Europe more than 15 times along with over 20 different countries. She explored Mexico extensively across the United States from coast to coast throughout Canada. Scotland and Ireland held special places in her heart too-with visits to the Isle of Skye being particularly meaningful-and experiencing English Royal history while visiting battlefields in France left lasting impressions on her. She cherished these travel moments shared with family or friends that filled each trip with laughter while creating wonderful memories captured through countless photographs-a true passion of hers.
A social butterfly at heart, Donna loved connecting with friends or family around the world. A big fan of board games who enjoyed music deeply-she especially adored The Rolling Stones having seen them perform live several times.
The holiday season always brought out her festive spirit but Christmas held a special place where she went all out decorating both indoors and outdoors showcasing stunning tablescapes that became part of family legend.
She appreciated life’s simple pleasures like watching sunsets over wheat fields or planting flower gardens alongside solar lights while enjoying finer experiences such as indulging lobster dinners or high tea served on fine china paired with delicious pastries.
In recent years though it was spending time with grandson Will that truly lit up Donna’s life where they bonded over music stories books making new memories together reminiscent of earlier days spent with her own children during their childhoods.
Donna will be missed dearly by all who knew her so we invite you to share your stories or memories about this incredible woman.
A celebration honoring her life will take place Tuesday July 14th at Mc Kenzies Portage Funeral Chapel beginning at 1:00 pm-the service will be available online via livestream accessible through registration using link below followed by burial taking place afterward at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
