Ontario – At 78 years old, he passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, and is now in the arms of his Lord and Savior. Born and raised in Plattsburgh, NY, he moved to Rochester, NY at 18 and soon joined the U. S. Navy.
Gale was preceded in death by his loving parents, Evelyn and Lawrence Roswell Howell; his brothers, Barry and Mike Howell; and his sister, Nancy Thayer. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 41 years, Diane Farnand Howell (‘Clancy’); his sons, Patrick (Lindsay) Howell and Paul (Yane) Howell; his cherished daughter, Margaret Howell; along with grandchildren Christian, Emrys, Elliott, and Evelynna. He is also survived by his brother, Richard (Harriett) Shivik; sisters-in-law Madeline Plummer, Linda Howell, Sheila (Jim) Hake, Anne Farnand; brothers-in-law Leo and Gerry Farnand; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Gale proudly served as a Machinist’s Mate Second Class Petty Officer on the U. S. S. Yellowstone AD-37 during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1973. After serving in the military, he volunteered as an EMT and Firefighter at the West Webster Fire Department. Gale dedicated much of his career as a stationery engineer for Kodak and Xerox while also sharing his expertise by teaching at Boces. Alongside Diane, he was committed to the Family Life Marriage ministry for many years.
He lived life with honesty and purpose guided by his strong faith in Christ. His love for family was profound-especially towards Diane-that love carried him through tough times in recent years. His greatest joy came from spending time with those closest to him.
Everyone who knew him will feel the loss deeply but finds comfort knowing he’s rejoicing with God in heaven.
