Canadian authorities have announced the arrest of a suspect connected to the deadly shooting of a security guard at the Pickering Casino in Durham, located east of Toronto.

34-year-old Michael Ferdinand lost his life during his shift at the casino early on October 9, 2023 – which was Thanksgiving Day in Canada – when he tried to remove a teenager from the establishment, according to a sentencing decision by Ontario Superior Court in 2025 involving an alleged accomplice.
The suspect, who remains unnamed due to being 17 at the time of the event, managed to evade capture for almost three years despite there being a nationwide warrant out for his arrest.
Law enforcement eventually caught up with him last Wednesday (July 15) in Saskatchewan. According to an official statement made by police on Monday (July 20), he was found with a loaded handgun at the time of his arrest.
Casino. org had previously identified a suspect after a judge temporarily lifted the publication ban regarding his identity first in November 2023 and again in December 2025.
During one of those instances, Casino. org reported that this suspect had been sharing music videos online while pursuing a rap career as if he was flaunting his freedom.

The Fatal Encounter
On October 9, 2023, this group arrived at the casino in a stolen Honda Civic just before 4 a. m., after spending part of their night outside Club 44 in Toronto, according to court records. Earlier that night at the club, it’s reported that the alleged shooter brandished a black handgun and aimed it at a bouncer who denied him entry. This led Ferdinand into an altercation with the teenager as he attempted to escort him out of the building. The suspect drew out a handgun from his waistband and pointed it directly at Ferdinand according to court documents. In response, Ferdinand grabbed onto the teenager’s arm trying to control access to the weapon which resulted in both men tumbling down onto the lobby floor. During their struggle, two shots were fired; one struck above Starbucks’ kiosk while another hit Ferdinand squarely in the chest. Several individuals from their group rushed towards them; one reportedly took hold of the gun while another pulled away their companion from Ferdinand who was injured on the ground. The group fled quickly as Ferdinand lay there bleeding heavily. One person drove off in their stolen Civic right past three marked police vehicles traveling opposite with lights flashing. Ferdinand was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital located in Toronto where he was pronounced dead around 6 a. m.Accomplice Receives Sentence
