York Region police are trying to identify a suspect involved in an assault that occurred over the weekend at a synagogue in Vaughan.

According to investigators, shortly after 9:30 a. m. on April 25, a man tried to enter the Vaughan Sephardic Kehila Centre located at 7026 Bathurst Street. When he was refused entry, he attempted to force his way inside.

“The suspect threw a stack of papers at security personnel, who prevented him from entering,” police mentioned in an updated statement on Wednesday.

Following this incident, a victim reported to the police that while they were walking along the sidewalk near the synagogue, the same man blocked their way and when they tried to walk past him, they were reportedly assaulted.

The victim suffered facial injuries as a result of the incident.

Authorities describe the suspect as a male with a dark complexion, about five feet eight inches tall and aged between 25 and 35 years. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a beige hooded jacket, a beige scarf, and white running shoes.

If anyone has information regarding this case, they are urged to contact the police.

Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca labeled the event “deeply disturbing” in a social media post. He highlighted that antisemitism and hatred towards Jews are increasing.

Recent data from Statistics Canada shows that hate crimes against Jewish individuals rose by 71 percent between 2022 and 2023, totaling 900 incidents reported by law enforcement.

This report includes information from Denio Lourenco
