LONDON, ON, June 22, 2026 /CNW/ – To help Canadians gain better access to affordable and sustainable homes, the Governments of Canada and Ontario have announced an investment of over $2.3 million through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (OPHI) to create 50 new affordable units in the City of London.
Moreover, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship is contributing $3.38 million via the Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP) to support 11 interim and transitional housing units within this development for asylum claimants. This is part of the Government of Canada’s larger commitment to long-term housing solutions that are community-based in London.
The project aims to accommodate a diverse group of residents such as families, vulnerable individuals, young adults, seniors, and persons with disabilities; approximately 21 percent of these units will be completely barrier-free. It boasts great access to public transit as well as essential community services while also providing shared facilities like a health and wellness center along with dedicated community programs on-site.
This announcement was made by Peter Fragiskatos, Member of Parliament for London Centre and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Roberston, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada; alongside Honourable Rob Flack from Ontario’s Municipal Affairs and Housing Ministry; along with Josh Morgan, Mayor of London.
Addressing Canada’s housing crisis requires urgent action to lower costs. A key component in this effort is Build Canada Homes which aims to speed up affordable home construction. Build Canada Homes also targets homelessness by developing transitional housing – collaborating with provinces, territories, municipalities along with Indigenous communities. It’s working on creating deeply affordable housing options for low-income families while partnering with private developers to deliver affordable homes for middle-class Canadians. As part of its broader initiatives addressing the housing crisis nationwide investments are being funneled into various segments within the housing sector tailored toward fulfilling community needs across Canada.
