One police trainee has died, and another is critically injured after a crash near London on Tuesday.
The accident took place close to the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, around 45 kilometers south of London, according to the Durham Regional Police Service.
Two DRPS Constables In Training (CIT) were en route to their training session when the collision occurred, police reported.
“It is with deep sadness that I share that one CIT has lost their life, while the other remains in life-threatening condition,” Durham police Chief Peter Moreira said in a statement.
“During this difficult time, our focus is on supporting the families of our CIT’s, as well as their classmates, instructors, friends, and members of our Service who are grieving this tragic loss. We will continue to ensure they receive the care and support they need.”
The identities of those involved have not been released yet. Authorities urged the public to “respect the privacy of the families and all those affected as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.”
There have been several police fatalities in Ontario over recent months. Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, 33, died in a motorcycle accident in Cobourg, Ont., on April 27.
OPP Const. Tarun Bali, 29, was struck by a vehicle and killed in Hearst, Ont., on June 9. A suspect has been charged with first-degree murder along with other offenses. Additionally, Toronto Police Service Const. Marc Pinizzotto was shot and killed on June 11.
