“Butch”, 81, of Sault Ste. Marie, passed away peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital after battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
He was born on May 29, 1945, to Svere “Jack” Mossing and Ingeborg “Jean” Eriksen in Simcoe, Ontario. He was the younger brother to Gloria and Robert.
Butch grew up in Port Dover by Lake Erie and later went to Western University where he studied Honours Biology before finishing medical school. After interning in Calgary, he practiced general medicine for two years before completing his surgical residency at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
He met his wife Martha “Marty” (nee Gilbertson) when they were kids. Marty and her brother Terry (Joan) also grew up in Simcoe, and their cousin Rob was one of Butch’s closest childhood friends. Butch realized early that Marty was meant for him.
Marty and Butch welcomed their daughter Susan in 1976 and later a son named Scott in 1980. The family decided to move back to Ontario and settled down in Sault Ste. Marie. He practiced medicine there for over 40 years.
Butch had a passion for learning and did well in school. His thoughtful and humble nature made him a careful and caring surgeon who dedicated himself to his patients and upheld the ethics of his profession.
Outside of work, he loved skiing during winter months and enjoyed spending time outdoors during summer. This included visits to a cabin at Sand Lake, followed by many rounds of golf with a great group of lifelong friends. Above all else, he was curious about life-always eager to learn about everything from politics to art to philosophy-which showed through his impressive book collection.
Once the children were older, he and Marty purchased land near St. Joseph’s Island where they built a waterfront cottage that brought them much happiness. A nature lover at heart, Butch loved watching wildlife around the cottage. Having owned two dogs along with several cats over the years, he was an animal friend who never missed a chance to pet any dog passing by.
Butch was a devoted father to Susan (Paul Brackstone) and Scott (Melissa Agnew), as well as a proud grandfather to Jack (18), Oscar (16), Angus Brackstone (12), Evelyn (10), and Declan (7) Mossing. Even though Scott and Susan moved out west, their families always looked forward to visiting the cottage or having Marty and Butch come stay with them.
In Butch’s final days, his family found comfort in the calm dignity he showed while knowing his time was limited. He expressed that he felt very content with how life had unfolded for him. Those who knew him-and were fortunate enough to receive his love or care-were lucky to be part of his journey. He will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.
Staying true to his simple nature, Butch requested no funeral service be held.
Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East, 705-759-2522). In place of flowers, donations can be made (by cheque or online) to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation or ARCH.
