The provincial government is providing funding to help three organizations upgrade training facilities and prepare more women and young people for careers in the skilled trades.
Ontario is investing over $2.2 million to enhance apprenticeship opportunities and update skilled trades training in Windsor. Through the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program and the Apprenticeship Capital Grant, this funding will support three organizations that aim to prepare 80 individuals for high-demand roles in the skilled trades while ensuring they use modern equipment and technology found on current job sites.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to safeguard Ontario’s future by equipping more workers with essential skills for fulfilling careers in the skilled trades. This approach ensures Ontario has a qualified workforce ready to build homes, highways, hospitals, schools, and other vital infrastructure.
“Ontario’s future depends on having the skilled workers needed to build it,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
“Our government is taking action by expanding opportunities for people in Windsor to start rewarding careers in the skilled trades. By investing in hands-on apprenticeship training, modern equipment and pathways into in-demand careers, we are helping more people, including women, youth and other underrepresented groups, develop the skills employers need while strengthening Ontario’s workforce for the future.”
The three organizations receiving funding today are:
– Women’s Enterprise Skills Training (WEST) of Windsor is getting over $1.56 million through the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program to train 60 women for roles as industrial electricians, electricians specializing in construction and maintenance, refrigeration and air conditioning technicians, sheet metal workers, and cement finishers-helping increase opportunities for women in sought-after construction jobs.
– St. Clair College will receive more than $641,000 to broaden skilled trades training efforts; this includes $291,065 through the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program aimed at training 20 participants from youth and underrepresented groups for careers as tool and die makers. Additionally, they’ll get $350,000 via the Apprenticeship Capital Grant to upgrade their Computer Numerical Control machining equipment with modern technology used across industries.
– The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers is set to receive $53,720 through the Apprenticeship Capital Grant for acquiring robotic surveying and monitoring tools that will give apprentices practical experience with advanced technologies utilized within Ontario’s construction sector.
Together these investments will enhance access to apprenticeship training while ensuring that providers have up-to-date facilities and tools necessary for preparing apprentices pursuing careers in high-demand fields like construction or manufacturing.
Modernizing facilities along with improving access to skilled trades is part of a government plan aimed at building a highly trained workforce capable of meeting increasing demands while keeping Ontario resilient moving forward. With its ambitious plan worth $236 billion dedicated towards infrastructure projects crucial for communities’ growth-it’s also connecting many individuals with stable well-paying job opportunities.
