THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Police Service is looking into an assault that occurred on Canada Day, which might have had a racial motive.

Authorities say they are aware of discussions and posts on social media regarding the incident.

Assault reported near Villa and Cumberland

Officers from the Primary Response Unit responded to the area of Villa Street and Cumberland Street North shortly after 12:45 p. m. on July 1, 2026, following reports of an ongoing assault.

Police found one suspect at the scene. That person was arrested and charged with assault.

A victim received treatment from Superior North EMS and was taken to the hospital for further care. Authorities report that the injuries are not life-threatening.

Investigation remains ongoing

The Thunder Bay Police indicate that the investigation is still active, and no additional information can be shared at this time.

The service emphasizes that everyone deserves to feel safe in their community. The police also state their commitment to investigating any claims or reports of individuals being targeted due to hate or bias.

None of these allegations have been proven in court.
