Recent rankings show U of G leading in Canada for food science and technology, as well as veterinary sciences.

The University of Guelph has been recognized as one of the best universities globally by subject, based on the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects from Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.

U of G took the top spot in Canada for veterinary sciences, continuing the Ontario Veterinary College’s tradition of excellence.

In the field of food science and technology, U of G ranked first in Canada and worldwide for its outstanding faculty. At the Ontario Agricultural College, students learn from these award-winning instructors to promote a healthier society through food and advancing technology.

The University also achieved second place in Canada in biotechnology, agricultural sciences, and hospitality and tourism management.

As one of just eight Canadian schools with at least three subjects ranked among the world’s top 50, U of G earned impressive global standings in veterinary science (11th), food science and technology (18th), and agricultural sciences (43rd).

Additionally, U of G was placed between 51-75th globally and ranked eighth worldwide for its distinguished faculty in biotechnology. Here, faculty from the College of Biological Science lead programs like the Master of Biotechnology, preparing students to integrate scientific knowledge with practical business skills alongside the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.

Strong rankings highlight exceptional faculty and research

This year’s rankings saw the University move into the global top 200 for economics. Its hospitality and tourism management program also climbed into the top 100 worldwide, landing at 76-100th place. The world-class research facilities associated with these programs showcase how Lang students excel in careers related to restaurant, tourism, and hospitality management.

Assessing over 2,000 institutions around the globe across 57 subject areas, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy bases its evaluations on criteria such as renowned faculty members, international collaboration efforts, research quality, output levels, and overall impact.

Dr. Rene Van Acker, president and vice-chancellor says that U of G’s ranking both nationally and internationally reflects its standing as a leading university.

“These rankings reflect the strength and global reach of our research community,” says Van Acker. “Our exceptional faculty are advancing discovery and creating solutions that improve life, and they are equipping the next generation with the knowledge to lead with purpose and carry that impact forward.”

As one of Canada’s premier research-focused universities, U of G has consistently worked towards forming partnerships that turn research findings into practical solutions.

Throughout campus, faculty are preparing future leaders who practice ethical innovation while addressing global challenges. Safeguarding our food supply, securing water resources, along with enhancing animal welfare as well as community health remain key priorities for researchers at U of G.
