A woman whose body was discovered on Friday close to Highway 401 in Pickering had been reported missing in Toronto just days earlier, and a man is now in custody, according to police.

The woman was reported missing on Wednesday in Toronto near Brimley Road and Omni Drive, as stated by Det. Sgt. Phillip Campbell, a spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service. Early Friday morning, officers found her body at the intersection of Highway 401 and Whites Road.

The man, who had been in a common law relationship with the victim, was charged with aggravated assault on the same day she went missing, Campbell mentioned.

Authorities quickly labeled the case as suspicious, he noted.

Campbell added that the suspect has shared some information with police and that they are not searching for any additional suspects at this time.

Police indicate that the man remains in custody and charges could be escalated as their investigation moves forward.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released. She marks Toronto’s 20th homicide victim of this year.

Campbell explained that because the woman was reported missing in Toronto, local police are leading the investigation.

Authorities posted on social media that they “located a deceased person in the area” shortly after midnight.

Workers nearby expressed concern over the incident when speaking with reporters.

“It’s troubling to know that something like this happened right here – something you see on like CSI or something,” Cam Watters, who works nearby, commented at the scene.

Watters mentioned noticing a helicopter earlier on Friday morning but initially thought it was related to traffic issues.

“It’s very concerning,” said Josh Wickis, another worker from the area.

Toronto police’s homicide unit has taken charge of this investigation.

Campbell stated that more details will be provided in a news release later on.
