One year after breaking ground, Trillium Health Partners (THP) has reached a significant construction milestone in the development of The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, with concrete pouring officially starting on one of the largest and most digitally advanced hospital redevelopment projects in Canada.
This milestone was celebrated with a ceremonial coin toss involving government officials, donors, and Team THP, following a construction tradition that symbolizes good luck. Crews then poured the coins into the foundation of the future hospital. Achieving this progress one year after groundbreaking is an important step forward in a once-in-a-lifetime redevelopment that aims not just to increase capacity but also to fundamentally change how health care is delivered within the Mississauga community.
“Together with ED+PCL Healthcare Partners, Infrastructure Ontario, Trillium Health Partners, and our design and trade partners, we’re proud to mark the one-year milestone since breaking ground on the future Mississauga Hospital,” said Chris Gower, President & CEO, PCL Construction. “The progress we’ve made this past year reflects what’s possible through strong partnerships, collaboration, and a shared vision for success. We are grateful to everyone involved whose expertise and commitment are bringing this project to life every day, benefiting the Mississauga community for generations to come.”
The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children are being designed as a modern hub of care that connects hospital services with primary care, home and community services, as well as long-term care to enhance patient experience. Centered within The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will be digitally enabled and linked across hospital-based services, ambulatory care, virtual options, and community support systems. This approach helps women, children, and families receive coordinated care instead of navigating through separate steps.
Progress is continuing smoothly on schedule and within budget. Some highlights include:
Excavation is now over 78% complete The site spans 250,000 square feet (about 15 hockey rinks) 7 tower cranes have arrived onsite Concrete foundation work including footings, walls, and s has begun A new roundabout will open off Bronte College Court this summer providing access to all entrances
“This event highlights the outstanding progress our project team has made over the past year and recognizes their daily dedication to moving the work forward,” said Kieran Hawe, President & Chief Executive Officer at Ellis Don Corporation. “We are grateful for the continued effort and commitment that have brought us to this milestone.
