The City of Vaughan is set to build a new “state‑of‑the‑art” Animal Shelter at 10401 Dufferin St.

This new facility will replace the current location at 70 Tigi Crt. and offer a modern space designed specifically for the health, safety, and well-being of pets and their owners. It will act as a central hub for animal care, adoption, and community involvement in Vaughan.

Designed by Unity, the two-storey building will cover 25,275 sq. ft. and is being constructed on the Maple Nature Reserve in Vaughan, a 43-acre natural area on the Oak Ridges Moraine. The design takes into account how animals move through the shelter from intake to adoption while ensuring proper separation based on health, temperament, and species to maintain the health and safety of all animal residents.

Mayor Steven Del Duca referred to this project as part of Vaughan’s “responsible growth and thoughtful city-building” strategy. Meanwhile, Ward 4 Councillor Chris Ainsworth noted that this new shelter would create “more effective spaces for staff and volunteers.”

“Once complete, the new shelter will provide much‑needed long‑term support for animal health and well‑being for years to come,” he said. “I also want to recognize staff for the compassionate work they do every day to care for animals in our community.”

Construction is expected to begin later this year with the demolition of the existing building on site, followed by designing the new animal shelter that will bring this facility to life.
