The Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed that several children lost their lives in a crash in Mapleton Township.
According to OPP, the accident occurred on Friday night at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12, close to Conestogo Lake, north of Kitchener, Ont.

First responders arrived at the scene where an SUV collided with a van around 7:30 p. m. They reported that multiple individuals from both vehicles sustained life-threatening injuries and there were “several fatalities.” The van had ten occupants while the SUV had one person.
On Saturday afternoon, police announced that five children traveling in the van died as a result of the collision. The ages of the children were 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. They were all part of the same family.
“Four adults and one infant suffered serious injuries and are still hospitalized,” West Region OPP Chief Superintendent Dwight Thib stated Saturday afternoon. “The driver of the SUV was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.”
Earlier that day, police informed that the children’s grandmother, both parents, and a sibling aged 15 months were also in the van. The mother is critically injured at a Hamilton hospital while the father is reported to be stable at a hospital in Listowel.
Police mentioned that the SUV driver broke their legs and is currently being treated at a Hamilton hospital.
No details have been released about the identity of another injured adult.

Thib confirmed that the family hailed from Elmira area.

“At this point in time, our investigation continues. The OPP West Region traffic incident management and enforcement team is diligently working to uncover all circumstances surrounding this tragic motor vehicle collision,” Thib shared.
The intersection was shut down for several hours but reopened by Saturday at around 4 p. m.
Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his condolences regarding this accident on Saturday via social media saying “My thoughts are with families and loved ones affected by yesterday’s tragic traffic collision in Mapleton Township and those receiving care in hospitals.”
“This heartbreaking loss is felt throughout our community and across our province. Let’s all come together for those who are mourning during this tough time,” he concluded his message.
