An 8-year-old girl has lost her life after being hit by a vehicle in Oakville.

Halton Region police report that shortly before 4 p. m. on Thursday, an SUV operated by a 47-year-old man was traveling west on North Service Road West, just past Lindsay Drive, when it veered off the road and struck a 39-year-old woman and her daughter.

Both were taken to a local hospital before being moved to trauma centers; however, despite efforts to save her, the child was pronounced dead. The mother’s injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

A spokesperson for the police informed 680 News Radio that they think the mother was heading to a nearby daycare center to pick up her toddler at the time of the incident.

Authorities say the driver of the SUV is facing charges for dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death.

The police are urging anyone who witnessed the event or has dashcam footage of it to get in touch with them as they continue their investigation.
