Wildfire smoke is causing ongoing issues in Windsor, leading the city to extend closures of recreational facilities and programs until Friday; organizers have also decided to cancel this weekend’s Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market and Dog Days of Summer event.

The City of Windsor shared on its website on Thursday that, following Environment Canada’s forecasts, service changes will stay in place until the end of Friday due to unhealthy air conditions caused by smoke from forest fires in northern Ontario.

The closures impact a variety of outdoor recreation programs and facilities. Summer day camps have been relocated indoors, while SUPIE park activities have been called off. Outdoor pools, sports fields and diamonds, along with park washrooms are also closed.

According to the city, Adventure Bay Family Water Park and the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre presented by WFCU Credit Union are closed as well.

<p At least two Experience Windsor events have also been affected. The free swim at Remington Booster Outdoor Pool and Wheels Night at City Hall Square have been cancelled; however, the free swim at the WFCU Centre indoor pool will go ahead as planned, according to the city.

Friday’s Peche Island tours have also been cancelled, but Lakeview Park Marina remains open.

Poor air quality expected into weekend

The poor air quality is anticipated to persist into the weekend, according to Environment Canada.

The federal weather agency has issued an orange-level air quality warning for the Windsor area.

Environment Canada predicts an Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) of 10 or higher throughout Saturday – indicating a high health risk category.

On Friday, the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (BIA) announced it has cancelled both the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market and Dog Days of Summer event set for Saturday.

The association explained that this decision was made in order to ensure the health and safety of visitors, vendors, performers, volunteers, staff and pets.

Residents are advised to limit their time outdoors whenever possible; they should follow public health recommendations and keep an eye on local weather updates regarding air quality as long as smoke conditions continue.

If conditions improve, the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market is expected to resume on Saturday, July 25; meanwhile, organizers mentioned that the Dog Days of Summer celebration has been postponed until Aug. 1.

Chatham-Kent opens smoke relief centre

Meanwhile, with wildfire smoke affecting southwestern Ontario significantly, Chatham-Kent has opened a temporary relief shelter offering people a safe indoor space away from hazardous air conditions.

The upstairs hall and lobby at Thames Campus Arena located at 1001 Grand Ave. W. in Chatham will be open Friday from 6 a. m. to 11 p. m. for anyone looking for respite from smoke exposure according to a news release from the municipality.

‘The health and safety of our residents is always a top priority,’ Mayor Darrin Canniff said in a statement. (CBC)

This action comes as Environment Canada forecasts widespread smoke throughout Friday across much of southwestern Ontario with temperatures reaching a high of 28 C; combined with a humidex factor making it feel like 33 C along with a “very high” UV index reading of 10 while poor air quality persists across many areas within southwestern Ontario

.

Additioanal relief locations are also extending their services as noted in this release.

Chatham Hope Haven will remain open with extended hours until Saturday morning at 10 a. m.; additionally , the Chatham Hope Centre located at 52 Croydon St will operate Friday evening between 6 p. m.-10 p. m.

“The health and safety of our residents is always a top priority,” Mayor Darrin Canniff said in response.

“We know these smoky conditions can be especially difficult for those who are unhoused, seniors, young children, and others facing vulnerabilities. By opening Thames Campus Arena as temporary shelter, we’re providing an indoor safe space where residents can escape from smoky conditions protecting their overall wellbeing until there’s improvement seen within air quality.”

Muncipal officials encourage community members check-in family, friends , neighbors , and others who may experience heightened sensitivity toward effects linked with poorair-quality ensuring everyone has access clean indoor environment needed alongside support available if required.

The municipality affirmed that they’ll closely monitor prevailing environmental concerns related towards improving general public welfare hence additional modifications might take place when deemed necessary based upon current circumstances affecting residents.

Citizens seeking updates regarding municipal service disruptions including facility closings can connect via CK Notices & Closures Facebook page while adhering advice provided through Chatham-Kent Public Health concerning personal protective measures aimed against wildfire-induced smokey situations.

This unfortunate decline concerning atmospheric qualities sparked reminders sent out by neighboring emergency services.
