Ontario’s police oversight agency reports that a man in Windsor has died after being shot by police during an alleged confrontation with another individual on Friday night.
The Special Investigations Unit indicates that Windsor police were dispatched to the intersection of Thornberry Crescent and Roseville Garden Drive around 6:30 p. m. following a report of a man armed with a knife involved in a dispute.
According to the SIU, upon arrival, officers encountered an injured individual while the man wielding the knife had fled the scene.
The agency states that law enforcement located the suspect with the knife and used an energy weapon – commonly referred to as a Taser or stun gun – before firing their weapons at him.
The man was subsequently transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The SIU has assigned four investigators along with two forensic specialists to this case, and an autopsy is set for Sunday.
