Elementary students from the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) have come up with amazing inventions using common household items.
These young creators from around the area have made it to the provincial level at this year’s Skills Ontario Junk Drawer Races.
The students dove into the world of skilled trades and technology by taking on fun engineering challenges. Teams used everyday materials to think big, create smart, and test their designs.
AMDSB students brought home a fantastic number of medals at the Western Regional competition. Little Falls Public School took over the Robot Walker contest for Grades 1 to 3, winning all three podium spots. Sprucedale Public School raced ahead to gold in the Cardboard Car Race, while South Perth Centennial Public School excelled in the Grade 6 Paper Glider event. Brookside Public School also picked up multiple medals in the Hydraulic and Pneumatic Machine Challenge for Grades 7 and 8.

The excitement continued into the provincial finals, where AMDSB students once again put on impressive performances. Little Falls Public School secured gold in the Robot Walker event, South Perth Centennial Public School achieved top honors in Paper Glide, and Brookside Public School won a silver medal in the Hydraulic and Pneumatic Machine Challenge.
“These results highlight the incredible creativity and problem-solving skills of our elementary students,” said Jodi Froud, OYAP Recruiter with the Avon Maitland District School Board. “Through initiatives like the Junk Drawer Races, students are introduced to hands-on learning that builds confidence, teamwork, and an early awareness of the skilled trades and technology pathways available to them.”
A large group of AMDSB students is now getting ready for the Skills Ontario Competition happening May 4 and 5 at the Toronto Congress Centre. A total of 52 elementary students will represent their board at this provincial event after qualifying through competitions held at the Pathways Innovation Centre.
Secondary students are also preparing for this challenge. After participating in local contests and qualifying rounds at Fanshawe College, ten AMDSB secondary students have secured their places at the provincial competition.

“The interest in the Skills Ontario Competition continues to grow across AMDSB; it’s exciting to see students pursuing opportunities to showcase their skills,” said Froud. “For many people involved , the local competitions provide valuable experience as well as a preview of what it’ll be like competing at a larger scale where hundreds participate and thousands come out to watch.”
