The Town of Whitby is set to establish a permanent tribute to bravery, sacrifice, and service, thanks to $135,000 in federal funding aimed at creating a Fallen Firefighter Memorial at Whitby Civic Park, located next to Town Hall.

This memorial will showcase a bronze sculpture of a kneeling firefighter in the center of a circular plaza. Designed as a space for reflection and education, it will provide families, colleagues, and residents with a significant place to pay their respects and learn about the history and contributions of WFES, according to a statement from the town.

By placing the memorial at Civic Park, the town ensures that this story of service and sacrifice stays visible, accessible, and integral to the community.

The memorial will honor seven Whitby firefighters who lost their lives while on duty and serve as an enduring tribute to those who risk their lives daily to protect the community. It will also commemorate the 175th anniversary of Whitby Fire and Emergency Services (WFES), linking past sacrifices with present-day dedication.

“We thank the Government of Canada and MP Turnbull for his support in making Whitby’s Fallen Firefighter Memorial a reality. This funding will help create a lasting site for remembrance that honors the courage and sacrifices made by firefighters who have safeguarded our community,” said Michael Hickey, Fire Chief for Whitby.

Mayor Elizabeth Roy remarked, “Whitby’s firefighters take on extraordinary risks while serving our community. This memorial will stand as an enduring recognition of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I appreciate the Government of Canada for providing this financial support that enables us to establish a dedicated space at Whitby Civic Park where families, colleagues, and residents can honor our fallen firefighters.”

MP for Whitby Ryan Turnbull stated: “Our fallen firefighters deserve a place where they can be remembered with dignity and respect. I’m proud that the Federal Government is supporting the Town of Whitby, WFES, and the Whitby Professional Firefighters Association in creating Durham Region’s first Fallen Firefighter Memorial.”

Quick Facts

Engraved names of seven fallen firefighters will be included in the design of the memorial along with an area for quiet reflection. 2026 marks WFES’ 175th anniversary; this memorial honors both this milestone and seven Line of Duty Deaths throughout WFES’ history. Funding for this project comes from contributions by The Government of Canada, The Whitby Professional Firefighters’ Association, The Town of Whitby, along with private donors. Construction is expected to begin soon with plans for unveiling in October.
