A father in Whitby, Ont., is feeling “desperate” for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.

Syed Mareer shared that his son, Subhan Mareer, was discovered unconscious with a seatbelt wrapped around his neck in the family’s minivan outside the Oshawa Centre, a shopping mall located on King Street W. near Stevenson Road S., last Friday.

According to Mareer, the family-along with Subhan’s three younger brothers-went out shopping that afternoon. Subhan chose to stay in the car. Upon their return, they found him with a seatbelt looped around his neck twice.

“The unexpected and violent death of our son has traumatized our whole family, but the worst part of it has been that we don’t have any answers about what happened. We are desperate for any answers or closures that we can get,” Mareer said.

The family shouted for help and a bystander intervened to cut the seatbelt.

Subhan was quickly taken to Lakeridge Health Oshawa and then moved to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, where he passed away on Wednesday.

Durham police are looking into the case but stated in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday that there is “no evidence to suggest criminality” in his death.

Mareer is urging anyone who may have information about Subhan’s passing to come forward.

He mentioned that their minivan was left unlocked while they shopped. Subhan was dressed in traditional Islamic attire when they left him sitting in the second row of the vehicle but was found later in the third row at the back corner.

“We are really desperate, looking for information from anyone who might know something or have seen anything.”

Set to start high school this fallSubhanwas a student at Jack Miner Public School and was all set to begin high school this fall at Donald A. Wilson Secondary School according to what his father told .

“He was happy. He found joy in playing games tinkering with computers and spending time with family and friends. There were no signs of any mental health issues or depression,” he stated.

“Our son was an incredible child. He was our firstborn; kind funny smart responsible and loving. We hope we can find some peace and at least understand why or how his life ended so soon.”..

Police say investigators are seeking information from anyone present at Oshawa Centre between 3:45 p. m. and 5:45 p. m. on Friday.
The public is encouraged to share any video footage or details they might have related to this incident.
“Investigators have reviewed surveillance footage from vehicles nearby as well as withinthe malland continue doing so. An autopsy is pending,” police confirmed.
