Victoria Day in 2026 falls on May 18 in Oshawa, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Whitby and Durham Region.

One of Canada’s oldest holidays, Victoria Day, is just around the corner. Canadians will celebrate what would be the 207th birthday of the ‘Mother of Confederation’ on May 24.

The holiday started back in 1845, before Canada became an independent country. Initially always observed on May 24, it was later adjusted to the third Monday of May, which means it can fall anywhere between the 18th and the 24th each year.

In 1952, it also began to mark the birthday of the current monarch.

Here’s a rundown of what’s open and closed on Victoria Day:

CLOSED

Most LCBO locations will be closed next Monday. It’s best to call ahead to confirm. Pickering Town Centre will be closed for the day; however, restaurants with street access will remain open. Durham’s municipal, provincial, and federal buildings as well as town halls will be shut down. All banks will not be operating. Public and Catholic schools throughout the region will be closed. Most recreation centres in the area will also be closed. Libraries are going to be closed.

OPEN

Movie theatres will welcome guests. Most Shoppers Drug Marts should be open; it’s a good idea to call ahead and check. Oshawa Centre will operate from 11 a. m. to 6 p. m. Many restaurants, cafes and bars that usually open on Mondays will also do so; calling ahead is recommended for confirmation. Convenience stores are expected to stay open. Most garden centres are likely to operate normally. Some recreation centres may have modified hours but should still be open. Select Beer Stores will continue business from 11 a. m. to 6 p. m., including: 200 Ritson Rd N, Oshawa, 75 Kingston Rd. E., Ajax 3950 Brock St N in Whitby The Wine Rack location at Scugog Street in Port Perry is set to open from 10 a. m. until 6 p. m. Most cannabis stores are likely to operate; it’s wise to check with your favorite one beforehand for confirmation. Many breweries across Durham Region plan on being open this Victoria Day-Old Flame in Port Perry and Town & Little Beasts in Whitby among them. Town’s Pumphouse Waterfront Garden is now welcoming visitors too. It’s best to call your preferred brewery first just to make sure they’re operating as usual. Municipal parks, conservation areas, beaches and walking trails are set to remain accessible for everyone. Splash pads have opened for the season and they’ll also operate on Victoria Day.

WASTE DISPOSAL

No garbage pickup is scheduled for Monday. Blue box recycling, green bin collection and waste pick-up has been pushed back by one day. Regional waste centres won’t be operating either.

TRANSIT

Durham Region Transit (DRT) along with Pulse buses will follow a holiday schedule.
GO Transit buses will run based on a Saturday schedule.

FIREWORKS

This Monday offers residents a chance for some fireworks fun! Victoria Day is one of only a few holidays where fireworks are allowed within Durham municipalities-alongside Canada Day and Diwali.

Keep in mind that each municipality has its own rules about where fireworks can legally go off. So checking with local city or town hall is essential if you want everything done right. Illegal usage could lead to hefty fines.

No official events celebrating Victoria Day are happening this year.
