Teams from the Northern Tornadoes Project will be in London and throughout southwestern Ontario on Wednesday following a strong storm that hit on Tuesday evening.

Tornado sirens were activated across the Western University campus during dinner time. Emergency Alerts also buzzed phones as far away as Waterloo Region just after 6 p. m.

“Tornado in this mobile coverage area,” reads the alert. “Take immediate cover in a basement or interior room if weather threat approaches. Shelter from flying debris if outside.”

The Region of Waterloo shared a safety notice on social media Tuesday afternoon.

“With the potential for severe thunderstorms today, there is always a chance for a tornado. Make sure you’re prepared in advance so you can stay safe.”

The damage reported in Waterloo Region was minimal, especially compared to what occurred in London.

Social media is filled with photos showing large trees uprooted, and even trampolines caught up in power lines.

London Hydro deployed its entire forestry crew to deal with the high number of downed trees throughout The Forest City.

Hundreds of customers experienced power outages.

The City of London announced that clean-up efforts are ongoing, focusing on clearing blocked roads and debris affecting homes, buildings, and vehicles.

Investigators will be present on Wednesday to check whether or not a tornado actually touched down.

No injuries have been reported.
