The police watchdog in Ontario is seeking witnesses after a man riding a scooter was seriously injured by an unmarked Toronto police vehicle in a Whitby parking lot on Tuesday.

In a news release on Wednesday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) stated that the incident occurred at the parking lot of a Canadian Tire store located at 4100 Garden St. around 6:20 p. m.

The SIU reported that Toronto police were searching for a man in Whitby when they found him riding a scooter alongside another individual.

An officer driving an unmarked police vehicle collided with the scooter in the parking lot. Another officer, also in an unmarked vehicle, hit one of the riders, an 18-year-old man, causing serious injuries.

The injured rider was taken to the hospital, where he is still receiving treatment.

The other person on the scooter ran away on foot but was later apprehended by police. The SIU noted that he didn’t sustain any serious injuries.

<p Anyone who has information regarding this incident or may have photos or videos is encouraged to reach out to the SIU.

The SIU is an independent government agency responsible for investigating police officers’ actions in cases that could lead to death, serious injury, firearm discharge, or claims of sexual assault.
