A 32‑year‑old woman from Whitby is dealing with several charges after police reported that she hit a parked car close to a public school while under the influence, then left the scene before officers found her at a nearby house.
Durham police responded to the area of Fifewood Crescent and Fallingbrook Street around 3:50 p. m. on Friday, Jan. 30. Investigators say a grey Kia sedan crashed into a parked white Hyundai, with both drivers present to pick up children.
The Hyundai driver attempted to talk to the woman driving the Kia, but according to police, the Kia sped away. Multiple witnesses indicated that the driver seemed impaired.
Officers found the Kia shortly afterward at a home nearby. Police stated that the woman showed obvious signs of impairment and was arrested without any issues. Thankfully, no one involved in the crash sustained physical injuries.
Breath tests performed at the station showed readings of 170 mg and 180 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood – more than twice the legal limit of 80 mg.
The woman faces charges for operating while impaired, operating while impaired – exceeding limits, failing to remain at an accident scene, and dangerous operation. She was released on an undertaking.
