Whitby’s biggest recreation project is now in its final stages. The Town of Whitby has officially taken over the Fieldgate Sports Complex, signaling the shift from construction to preparations for opening.
With construction nearly finished, Town staff are getting the complex ready for its debut by commissioning systems, setting up equipment and furnishings, training employees, and completing final tasks to ensure everything is operational – starting with the arenas that opened for the Ontario Lacrosse Festival on July 31.
“The Fieldgate Sports Complex is a once-in-a-generation investment in our community’s future and priority action coming out of Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan. Today’s handover represents years of planning, collaboration, and community input coming together. We are excited to soon start welcoming residents through the doors of this incredible new facility and see the lasting impact it will have on our community,” said Elizabeth Roy, Mayor, Town of Whitby.
Preparation work across all other areas of the complex – both indoors and outdoors – will keep moving forward ahead of the facility’s Official Grand Opening Celebration on September 12.
“With the facility handover complete, our focus now turns to preparing the facility for opening. Over the coming weeks, staff will be testing systems, training employees, moving into the facility, and ensuring residents have a welcoming experience from the moment they walk through the doors. We look forward to giving residents and visitors a first look at the new arenas as part of the Ontario Lacrosse Festival. At the same time, work will continue on outdoor amenities as we prepare for the official Grand Opening Celebration in September,” said Matt Gaskell, Chief Administrative Officer, Town of Whitby.
