A dedicated site to honor the bravery, sacrifice, and service of Whitby firefighters who lost their lives on duty is being established at Civic Park this fall. This initiative is made possible by $135,000 in federal funding aimed at creating a Fallen Firefighter Memorial.
The memorial will pay tribute to the seven Whitby firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the community and will stand as a lasting recognition of those who risk their lives daily. It will also coincide with the 175th anniversary of Whitby Fire and Emergency Services, linking past sacrifices with current efforts.
“Whitby’s firefighters take on incredible risks for our community, and this memorial will serve as a permanent reminder of those who gave everything,” said Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy, who expressed gratitude to Ottawa for funding support that allows for a “dedicated space” at Whitby Civic Park where families, colleagues, and residents can remember the service of fallen firefighters.
The memorial will include a bronze sculpture depicting a kneeling firefighter positioned within a circular plaza. Designed as an area for reflection and learning, it aims to provide families, colleagues, and residents with an impactful place to pay tribute and discover more about the history and legacy of Whitby Fire.
“Our fallen firefighters deserve a place that honors their memory with dignity,” stated Whitby MP Ryan Turnbull.
By placing the memorial at Civic Park next to Town Hall, Whitby ensures that this story of service and sacrifice remains visible and accessible within the community, according to Roy.
The engraved names of the seven fallen firefighters will be incorporated into the design of the memorial alongside a tranquil plaza meant for contemplation.
