An air quality alert is currently in place for Waterloo Region and nearby areas.

This warning, which started on Wednesday, may last until early Friday with no immediate signs of improvement.

The alert was first issued at a yellow level but was quickly upgraded to an orange level by 8 a. m. on Wednesday.

<p According to the national weather agency, the poor air quality is due to smoke from forest fires in northwestern Ontario.

Update: Air Quality Index data from Environment Canada as of 9 a. m. Wednesday. (Environment Canada)

Residents in Waterloo Region noticed a smoky smell on Wednesday morning, as the Air Quality Index rose to 6 before 8 a. m., reached 9 just before 9 a. m., and peaked at over 10 shortly before 10 a. m.

Environment Canada predicts that levels will remain above 10, indicating very high risk, throughout the day on Wednesday and into Thursday.

Seniors, pregnant individuals, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable.

“As smoke levels increase, health risks increase,” Environment Canada stated. “Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.”

The air quality issues have resulted in closures and cancellations across Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo. This includes the cancellation of a FIFA World Cup viewing party that was scheduled at the Kitchener Market despite prior plans following a weekend fire.

The decline in air quality followed extremely high temperatures that hit 34 C on Tuesday, feeling like 41 C with humidity; thus prompting a heat warning.

The forecast for Wednesday predicted some sun mixed with clouds along with highs of around 31 C and humidex values close to 34 C; however, the heat warning was lifted later in the afternoon.
