Three teenagers from Whitby are now facing several charges after police found a stolen vehicle over the weekend – an event that connected one of the boys to a violent robbery at a jewellery store in Durham Region.

The situation began around 8:45 a. m. on Jan. 17, when officers on routine patrol spotted a stolen Honda SUV near Twin Streams Drive and Country Lane.

Police tried to block the vehicle, but the driver sped away, hitting a cruiser before losing control and crashing into a tree nearby.

All three individuals ran off on foot.

Durham police sent multiple units to search the nearby area. Officers located and apprehended all three suspects shortly after.

Teen Linked to Jewellery Store Robberies in Pickering and Oshawa, According to Police

Investigators state that one of the teens is now charged in connection with a jewellery store robbery that happened two days earlier, on Jan. 15, at Peoples Jewellers located in Pickering City Centre. Police claim this same youth also attempted to rob Oshawa Jewellery at Oshawa Centre on the same day. The investigation into these robberies is still ongoing.

A 16‑year‑old boy from Whitby faces serious charges, including robbery, attempted robbery, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, leaving an accident scene, multiple counts of disguise with intent, possession of property obtained by crime valued over $5,000, and two counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He has been held for a bail hearing.

A 14‑year‑old boy from Whitby is charged with possession of property obtained by crime valued over $5,000 and disguise with intent. He was released under certain conditions.

Another 16‑year‑old boy from Whitby faces the same two charges – possession of property obtained by crime valued over $5,000 and disguise with intent – and was also released under similar conditions.

Police are urging anyone who has cellphone footage, dash-cam video, surveillance recordings or any other information to reach out to investigators.
